Mia joined LEAPH as a Ph.D. student and a Via Scholar in the Charles E. Via, Jr. Environmental and Water Resources Program in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Virginia Tech in Fall 2023, co-advised by Dr. Jingqiu Liao and Dr. Amy Pruden. Mia’s research is centered on microbial risk assessment during aquifer recharge.

Mia received their bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering from Iowa State University, where they were a former McNair Scholar. During their undergraduate studies, Mia conducted research on topics related to biogeochemistry and environmental science. Their education and life experiences have grown their interest in environmental engineering and environmental justice.
